Spring and autumn offer the most pleasant temperatures for exploring Marrakech, with warm days and cool evenings. Summer can be extremely hot with temperatures regularly exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, while winter is mild during the day but cold at night.

The Berber village of Imlil at 1,740 meters is the starting point for treks to Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak (4,167 meters). Even without a summit attempt, the drive through the High Atlas passes stunning mountain scenery, terraced villages, and walnut groves. Day hikes to nearby waterfalls and Berber villages are accessible to all fitness levels.

Atlas Mountains & Imlil Valley

This laid-back Atlantic coast town offers a refreshing contrast to Marrakech's intensity. Explore the UNESCO-listed medina, walk the ramparts overlooking the ocean, eat fresh seafood at the port, and enjoy the constant ocean breeze. Supratours buses make the journey for approximately 80 MAD.

Essaouira

Morocco's most spectacular waterfalls cascade 110 meters over red cliff faces surrounded by olive groves. Barbary macaque monkeys inhabit the area, and rainbow-mist rises from the base where you can take a boat ride. Small restaurants overlook the falls.

Ouzoud Waterfalls

A lush valley in the foothills of the High Atlas, easily accessible for a half-day trip. Visit the Saffron Garden, Berber villages, and hike to the Setti Fatma waterfalls. Local restaurants serve tagine on terraces overlooking the river. The weekly Monday souk (market) is particularly colorful.

Ourika Valley

Marrakech is Morocco's culinary capital, offering everything from steaming tagines in the medina to inventive modern Moroccan cuisine in palatial restaurants. The street food scene at Jemaa el-Fna is legendary, with dozens of stalls serving grilled meats, snail soup, sheep head, and freshly squeezed orange juice each evening.

The UNESCO-recognized square transforms each evening into the world's greatest open-air spectacle. Grab a rooftop terrace seat at Cafe de France or Cafe Glacier for panoramic views as the food stalls fire up their grills, musicians begin playing, and the square fills with thousands of people. Descend to street level to eat at the stalls — look for the busiest ones with the most locals.

Experience Jemaa el-Fna at sunset

The labyrinthine covered markets north of Jemaa el-Fna are organized by trade: Souk Semmarine for textiles and clothing, Souk des Babouches for leather slippers, Souk Haddadine for metalwork, Souk des Teinturiers for dyed fabrics. Bargaining is expected and part of the experience — start at about one-third of the asking price and negotiate from there.

Get lost in the souks

This 14th-century Quranic school is one of the finest examples of Marinid architecture in Morocco. The central courtyard features an ornate pool surrounded by intricate zellige tilework, carved cedar wood, and stucco plasterwork. The 130 student dormitory cells offer an intimate glimpse into Islamic scholarly life. Entry costs 50 MAD.

Visit the Ben Youssef Madrasa

This electric-blue Art Deco villa surrounded by a botanical garden of cacti, bougainvillea, and bamboo was created by French painter Jacques Majorelle in 1923 and later restored by fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent. The on-site Berber Museum houses an excellent collection of Amazigh jewelry, textiles, and artifacts. Entry costs 70 MAD for the garden plus 30 MAD for the museum.

Riads are traditional Moroccan houses built around an interior courtyard garden, often with a fountain and rooftop terrace. Hundreds have been converted into boutique guesthouses within the medina. Staying in a riad is one of the most authentic Marrakech experiences — many offer home-cooked Moroccan dinners, cooking classes, and warm hospitality. Book one in the Mouassine or Bab Doukkala areas for easy medina access.

For the authentic local version, visit a neighborhood hammam with black soap (savon beldi), a kessa scrubbing glove, and ghassoul clay. Popular tourist-friendly options include Les Bains de Marrakech and Heritage Spa. A local hammam costs 15-20 MAD; upscale spa hammams range from 200-600 MAD.

The historic walled city is a dense maze of narrow alleys (derbs), dead ends, and covered passages that can feel disorienting but are endlessly rewarding to explore. The medina contains most of Marrakech's major sights including the souks, Jemaa el-Fna, Ben Youssef Madrasa, and hundreds of traditional riads converted into guesthouses. Getting lost is part of the experience — landmarks like minarets help with orientation.

Medina (Old City)

The modern European-planned district built during the French Protectorate era (1912-1956) is centered on Avenue Mohammed V and Place du 16 Novembre. Gueliz offers a different Marrakech experience with wide boulevards, international restaurants, rooftop bars, contemporary art galleries, and modern shopping. The area around Rue de la Liberte is particularly popular for dining.

Gueliz (Ville Nouvelle)

The southern part of the medina contains the Royal Palace, the Saadian Tombs, El Badi Palace ruins, and the historic Jewish quarter (Mellah). The Mellah, established in 1558, was one of the largest Jewish quarters in Morocco and retains distinctive architecture with wooden balconies and the Lazama Synagogue. The Kasbah area is quieter than the northern medina and home to many upscale riads.

An upscale residential neighborhood southwest of the medina, Hivernage is where most of Marrakech's luxury hotels and casino are located. Tree-lined avenues, manicured gardens, and elegant restaurants give this area a distinctly refined atmosphere. It is conveniently located between the medina and Gueliz.
